The poem, "The Lesson" is a good poem, but it is very dark and talks about death. What i do like about this poem is that at the end it has a twist and talks about how all that is what you go through to live. One poetic device in this poem is metaphor. The reason it is metaphor is because it compares a child's fist to a colapsing vain which are two very different things. Another poetic device used in this poem is free verse because it does not follow a specific rhyme scheme. I also think you would be able to say that this an extended metaphor because it talks about death and all this pain she has to go through. Lastly, at the end of the poem, she says that she does all this because she loves to live. Overall this poem is good, but it is not my favorite because of how dark it is.
